About The Town of Vassalboro Maine
Vassalboro is a community
nestled between the banks of the Kennebec River and the West Basin of China
Lake. Fertile farmland, small villages, and gentle rolling hills give our town a
unique character. Settled in 1760 and incorporated on April 26, 1771, Vassalboro
has developed into a community committed to quality of life, economic
opportunity, and a sound education system. Current population as of the 2000
census is 4,047.
Our town has frontage on a major river; the
Kennebec, and on four lakes and ponds. We have outstanding recreational
opportunities. Vassalboro is home to the only 36 hole golf course in Maine;
Natanis Golf Course. It is the home to Duratherm Window Corporation, Kennebec
Bean Company, Inc., and has some of the larger dairy farms in Central Maine.
An elected Board of Selectmen governs
the Town. They hire a Town Manager who conducts the day-to-day business of the
town. The town also has several elected and appointed committees such as The
School Committee, The Budget Committee, the Planning Board, and others. Each
spring citizens gather for a traditional “Town Meeting” at which budgetary
items and other town business are weighed and accepted or not.
